Comments: Doug...You will note that in the letter you post that HPL refers to the cultural dilution through limits on immigration, not race purity...sort of like English only laws.

Comments: Doug...Clinton RAN on Welfare reform in '92, it was part of the platform that got him elected He signed NAFTA in '93. China and MFN status was under his watch. DOMA as well. Not to mention the budget surpluses...through the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act - unanimously voted down by the Republicans. These are all conservative things...Clinton is a better conservative than Reagan was. AND he ran on that platform, it was not thrust upon him by the midterms, these are all things done before that.
Regardless... I don't really care about what Obama is doing right now, I believe he is doing the best he can given the reality of the world.
I just don't see how the platform you posted for the pledge to America gets anything out of the peoples hair...unless you are a big corporation, then it's GO FOR IT. There is NO mention of government getting out of peoples lives at all, no discussion of civil liberties or personal freedom. So I would say that there is no reason to think that the cons will do anything to help get government out of our lives...in spite of your assertion that it is what they want.

Lovecraft died in 1937. Just when do you propose he abandoned his racism? You might have missed the chapter in American progressivism where all of these eugenicist racist bastards were just eugenistic racist bastards.
------
In a letter written to J. Vernon Shea on 25 September 1933, Lovecraft asserts that "The problem of race & culture is by no means as simple as is assumed either by the Nazis or by the rabble-catering equalitarian columnists of the Jew-York papers. Of course Hitler is an unscientific extremist in fancying that racial strain can be reduced to theoretical purity, that the Nordic stock is intellectually & aesthetically superior to all others"; however, "just this much of Hitler's basic racial theory is perfectly & irrefutably sound: namely, that no settled & homogeneous nation ought (a) to admit enough of a decidedly alien race-stock to bring about an actual alteration in the dominant ethnic composition, or (b) tolerate the dilution of the culture-stream with emotional & intellectual elements alien to the original cultural impulse" (SL 4:247,249).

To fully understand Clinton's conservatism you need to understand that he turned away from his progressivism only after the voters rejected his policies at the polls in 1994. Will Obama now abandon his polices which have been similarily rejected?
Where's the repeal of the Patriot act - Obama/Reid/Pelosi by their inaction have proven their support of the act. As previously discussed Obama has expanded his powers in warrantless wiretaps and the orders to assassinate an American citizen without trial or formal charges. Another broken pledge by Obama.
Where's the get rid of interventionist wars -Obama is the commander-in-cheif and can discontinue warmongering at any time through a verbal command. Is Obama too busy to find 20 seconds to order his troops out of any situation. In fact, he must plan and order his troops into war - therefore Obama is in full support of the wars. Another broken pledge by Obama.
Where is the constitutionally mandated 2 year limit on war debt - Congress has not declared the US to be at war anytime since WWII.
Where is the elimination of emergency funding of war - Anothet broken pledge by Obama.
Where is the removal of DOMA? Another broken pledge by Obama - trying to repeal a Clinton law...

I understand that the "intellectuals" idolize Lovecraft. He really cuts to the chase, and exemplifes everything a good progressive believes.
The quote below completely identifies your views.
“Now the trickiest catch in the Negro problem is the fact that it is really twofold. The Black is vastly inferior. There can be no question of this among contemporary and unsentimental biologists… But, it is also a fact that there would be a very grave and very legitimate problem even if the Negro were the White man’s equal.”

Comments: A good example of "The more things change, the more they stay the same." Also speaks to the issue of conservatism aring less from ideological musings than the result of one's emotional, reactive self. ~~~~~~~~~~~ "As for the Republicans — how can one regard seriously a frightened, greedy, nostalgic huddle of tradesmen and lucky idlers who shut their eyes to history and science, steel their emotions against decent human sympathy, cling to sordid and provincial ideals exalting sheer acquisitiveness and condoning artificial hardship for the non-materially-shrewd, dwell smugly and sentimentally in a distorted dream-cosmos of outmoded phrases and principles and attitudes based on the bygone agricultural-handicraft world, and revel in (consciously or unconsciously) mendacious assumptions (such as the notion that real liberty is synonymous with the single detail of unrestricted economic license or that a rational planning of resource-distribution would contravene some vague and mystical ‘American heritage’…) utterly contrary to fact and without the slightest foundation in human experience? Intellectually, the Republican idea deserves the tolerance and respect one gives to the dead." --H. P. Lovecraft from a 1936 letter to G. L. Comments: Doug...And it's all BS... Watch and see, look at the previous people who've said the same things...it's a LIE designed to appeal to uneducated people while pumping the federal coffers into the pockets of large corps and their masters.
Also I don't see where in that there is ANY mention of keeping out of individuals lives...just keeping out of big corp way, and helping them suck the economy dry. Where's the repeal of the Patriot act, where's the get rid of interventionist wars, where is the constitutionally mandated 2 year limit on war debt, where is the elimination of emergency funding of war, where is the removal of DOMA?
The list goes on and on...all that's in there is a mandate for further corporatist conquest of our nation. Not a dime for innovation or small business.
Keep listening to people who tell you the lies you want to hear and forgiving them their transgressions, it suits the pathology.
FWIW Clinton was a better Republican than anyone since Eisenhower.... look at the record of policy accomplishments.

Can you simplify your logic for us Neanderthals?
People who are conservative and Christians believe in idolatry and a book of fables.
People who are liberal and Christian are learned and righteous.
Is that the logic you propose?
Let's discuss the compassion of letting humans succeed and fail without getting in the way of progress.
Why is it that progressives wish to slow humanity's economic, intellectual and cultural development by proposing that government must always intercede to progress only towards a limited state-approved goal? Socialism always limits output and always limits human potential and therefore always impedes humanity's progress.

As always, your hyperbole does not match reality. Where the heck do you get your "facts" from? Mr. Maddow?
The new "Contract from America" top ten priorities are:
Identify constitutionality of every new law: Require each bill to identify the specific provision of the Constitution that gives Congress the power to do what the bill does.
Reject emissions trading: Stop the "cap and trade" administrative approach used to control pollution by providing economic incentives for achieving reductions in the emissions of pollutants.
Demand a balanced federal budget: Begin the Constitutional amendment process to require a balanced budget with a two-thirds majority needed for any tax modification.
Simplify the tax system: Adopt a simple and fair single-rate tax system by scrapping the internal revenue code and replacing it with one that is no longer than 4,543 words – the length of the original Constitution.
Audit federal government agencies for constitutionality: Create a Blue Ribbon taskforce that engages in an audit of federal agencies and programs, assessing their Constitutionality, and identifying duplication, waste, ineffectiveness, and agencies and programs better left for the states or local authorities.
Limit annual growth in federal spending: Impose a statutory cap limiting the annual growth in total federal spending to the sum of the inflation rate plus the percentage of population growth. (56.57%).
Repeal the health care legislation passed on March 23, 2010: Defund, repeal and replace the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
Pass an 'All-of-the-Above' Energy Policy: Authorize the exploration of additional energy reserves to reduce American dependence on foreign energy sources and reduce regulatory barriers to all other forms of energy creation.
Reduce Earmarks: Place a moratorium on all earmarks until the budget is balanced, and then require a 2/3 majority to pass any earmark.
Reduce Taxes: Permanently repeal all recent tax increases, and extend permanently the George W. Bush temporary reductions in income tax, capital gains tax and estate taxes, currently scheduled to end in 2011.

Comments: Doug...Civil Libertarians, and the Libertarian party believe in smaller government, Conservatives believe in larger more intrusive government regarding moral legislation and are Corporatist as regards fiscal policy and are military interventionist in support of corporations, regardless of the impact on the nation as a whole...at least looking at the proposed policy goals, as well as the implemented policies.
So, I would say that the conservatives lie, not only to the voter, but to them selves as well. At least the progressives tell the truth regarding their policies.

@Gary Williams
That's an interesting article, whether it fits with general current research or not. If correct, it could become yet another thing that has opened my eyes recently to 'why people are this way'. Because the conservative model of social interraction described here is understandable in a warped way, and almost pitiable.
Imagine the paranoia and misery it would rouse, needing strongly to feel safe in a secure group and being under an internal impulse to dominate others, to ensure agreement and gather a flock of like-minded buffers against the outside world. And then not being able to quite trust anyone in this group because one doesn't actually (dare) know them all that well, thus having a constant underlying fear of betrayal at the very heart of one's security. And the most instinctive solution to this fear is to more strongly gather more like-minded together, to reinforce the agreement and lash out against all that is other in an attempt to drive the threat away...
What a savage, primitive mindset! Right out of our pre-neolithic past - and as useful today as hurling spears at the eclipsing sun or sacrificing animals to buy off natural disasters.
As for the other thing Gary Williams said; I too have observed that awareness of the dangers of authoritarianism (the coalesence of the authoritarian mindset with the very conservative end of the American political spectrum and very conservative Christianity) is slowly spreading through modern consciousness. The question is, will it be enough and in time? Or will America have to rely on its next young generation to move it forward again, after this one has buckled under the hate and fear?
FWIW, I've already seen some first brave signs of the 'Christian Left' - I had been wondering where they were these last many years. They are mostly young people, serious, humane, tolerant and dedicated. They care about the poor and disadvantaged, about making life better for most people (millionaires and billionaires naturally excepted), about equality and fairness, and about the damage we are doing to our planet. They quietly distance themselves from the Corporate Christianty of most of America. I'm not religious myself but these young people have my support. And I have to admit they have a great tag-line compared to fundamental Christianity - 'Our God is a God of Love, not a God of Hate'.

Will you explain the following violence against tea party activist Kenneth Gladney.
As a contrast, Gladney wad beaten by multiple union thugs. Did the thugs apologize? Did SEIU kick them out of their thug organization? Did any Democrat condem the thugs?
The answer is no. Instead of condeming violence, Democrats actually called to esclate the violence.
Who told union thugs to punch back twice as hard? Who said that if conservatives bring a knife, that union thugs should bring a gun?
